Privacy Policy

In short: Your documents stay on your Mac. The app does send a small amount of anonymous diagnostic data — crashes, which features get used, how long a session lasted — so we can find out what is broken. It has no accounts, no advertising, and no way to tell who you are. The one exception is feedback: when you choose to write to us from the app, your message is sent together with a screenshot of the Word Writer window and some technical details.

What the app collects

Anonymous diagnostics — and, only when you send it, your feedback. Three things, all anonymous: crash reports (the stack trace, your macOS and app version), usage counts (that the app was launched, roughly how many minutes a session lasted, and how many times each feature was used), and where people get stuck in the purchase flow. Each install generates one random identifier so these can be grouped into sessions; it is not your device serial number, it is not tied to your Apple ID, and it is not shared with anyone.

Never collected automatically: the contents of your documents, their file names, your name, email address or Apple ID, your location, or anything that could identify you. File paths are stripped from error messages before they are sent, because a file name is often the content itself. The only way any of this reaches us is in feedback you decide to send, described below.

Your documents

Documents you write are saved to the location you choose on your own Mac, in standard formats (Word .docx and .doc, ODT, RTF, plain text, HTML and others). Backups the app makes are written next to the document, also on your Mac.

We never see your document files — they are never uploaded. The one thing to know: the screenshot sent with feedback (see below) shows the Word Writer window, including whatever part of a document is on screen at that moment. There is no sync service and no cloud storage of ours. If you store your files in iCloud Drive, Dropbox or a similar service, that is between you and that provider.

When the app uses the network

The app connects to the network for four things: in-app purchases (Apple handles the transaction), crash reports, the usage counts described above, and feedback when you send it. That is all.

We receive no payment details. Apple processes the purchase and tells the app only whether the product was purchased. Apple's handling of that transaction is covered by Apple's Privacy Policy.

Feedback you send from the app

Help ▸ Send Feedback opens a window where you can write to us. When you press Send, we receive what you wrote, the email address and name you entered, a screenshot of the Word Writer window as it looked when you opened the feedback window (it can show part of the document you had open), and technical details: app and macOS version, Mac model, graphics and display setup, language settings, the state of the open document such as its file name and page count, and the app’s recent activity log. The document file itself is never sent.

It travels over an encrypted connection to our server (run on Cloudflare), where it is stored privately, and is emailed to the developer so we can investigate and reply. Screenshots are kept in private storage that only the developer can open. We use all of it only to answer you and to fix what went wrong — never for marketing, and it is never shared or sold. If you would like your feedback deleted, tell us and we will delete it.

The App Store itself

Apple provides us with aggregate statistics about the app — how many people downloaded it, in which countries, on which macOS versions, and any ratings and reviews people choose to leave. These are aggregate numbers; they do not identify individual users to us. This is standard for every app on the App Store and is not something the app itself does.

This website

word-writer.app is served by Cloudflare and has no analytics, no cookies and no third-party trackers.

If you use the feedback form, the name, email address and message you type are stored on our server and emailed to us so we can read and reply. We use them for that and nothing else — no mailing list, no sharing with anyone. The form is rate limited by IP address, which means your IP is briefly held (one hour) purely to stop the form being flooded.

Children

Word Writer is a general-purpose word processor. It is not directed at children and collects no data from anyone, of any age.

Changes

If this policy changes, the date at the top of this page changes with it. The last substantive change was in version 2.1, which added sending feedback from inside the app (described above). Version 2.0.1 added the anonymous crash reporting and usage counts — earlier versions sent nothing at all.
